Which Martyr anodes do you need?

Complete sets

Handy if you want to replace all the anodes for your outboard motor or tailpiece at once. These sets are tailored to specific motor types or brands. Often a set contains multiple anodes: for example for the cavitation plate, propeller shaft and underwater housing.

Loose anodes

Think of zinc anodes for the propeller shaft, magnesium anodes for fresh water, or aluminum anodes for combination waters. They are available in different shapes: rod, ring, disk, block or screw anode.

Which alloy should I choose?

: for use in salt water

: suitable for both fresh and brackish water

Frequently Asked Questions

Why are anodes important for my boat?

Anodes attract electrical current and slowly dissolve. This protects other metal parts of your boat – such as the propeller, shaft, tailpiece or cooling channels – from corrosion. Without anodes, damage to these parts can occur.

How do I know which anode set I need?

Look at the brand and type of your outboard motor or gearcase. Many Martyr sets are specifically tailored to brands such as Yamaha , Mercury or Volvo Penta. The product title or description usually states which type of motor the set is suitable for.

Should I choose zinc, aluminum or magnesium?

That depends on the type of water you are sailing in:

  • zinc
  • aluminum
  • magnesium

How often should I replace my anodes?

Check the anodes at least once a season. If more than 50% of the anode is dissolved, it is time to replace it. Remember that poor connection or paint over the anode will severely limit its operation.
