For small boats up to approximately three meters, an anchor of one to two kilograms usually works perfectly, especially if you mainly sail on inland waters. Boats of four to five meters generally suffice with three to four kilograms, as this provides quick grip and is still easy to handle. For boats of six to eight meters, five to eight kilograms is a safe, popular option, especially when there is more mass or more wind action.

An anchor works best when there is extra weight on the line. You can use a short, sturdy chain or an anchor line with a lead core for this. The chain ensures that the anchor is dragged flat along the bottom and digs in faster. A leaded line works well for smaller boats or when you want a lighter, flexible line. In rougher water, however, a chain provides the most reliable performance.
